In Conversation with Frank Juarez, ArtDose Magazine
Recently I sat down and talked with Frank Juarez for an indepth conversation about my studio practice. We talked about all aspects of my work includiing painting, mixed media, and installations.
Despite many years of teaching art and giving lectures and exhibitions talks, I still found myself nervous before my conversation with Frank Juarez of ArtDose Magazine the 2nd day of March 2021. Frank had kindly allowed me to postpone our talk for a couple of weeks. The preceding weeks had been physically and mentally intense as I finished the final elements and installed When A Tree Thrives, an installation about climate change.
I have followed Frank on Instagram for quite a while and I subscribe to his weekly email newsletter but we had not met in person. He is a generous hard working advocate for the arts in Wisconsin. In addition to his Artist Talks series, Frank publishes a biannual magazine, ArtDose Magazine, and writes a weekly ArtDose e-zine with a featured artist and other arts news.
At first it felt a little like sitting down for an exam – something I eagerly anticipated but with some trepidation. What questions would he ask, would my brain freeze, could I remember anything?
We spoke for over an hour and his questions were straight forward and curious – just perfect to put me at ease. Sure, there were times I just couldn’t get the word out – but other than repeatedly saying “opposite color” instead of “complementary color,” my brain functioned for the most part.
We spoke about the inspiration for my work, some stories behind the paintings, and my process.
As I watched the finished episode I realized how much I talk with my hands. I hope you will enjoy this conversation. I always love to listen to other artists talk about their work – much more interesting than being in front of the camera!
